It applies the published STC factor schedule and the 1 May 2026 tiers to the usable capacity you enter, at an indicative net certificate value, then adds the state layer that applies to your postcode using the published state rates (NSW at about $40 per kWh on up to 28 kWh, WA at $130 or $380 per kWh on up to 10 kWh, the City of Adelaide council rebate in 5000 and 5006). It does not know your installer’s exact STC price, your VPP provider’s offer, or whether your property meets every eligibility rule, which is why the result is a range to check rather than a quote.
How the federal figure is calculated
The discount is a number of Small-scale Technology Certificates per usable kWh, set by an STC factor that steps down every six months, multiplied by what those certificates are worth. Since 1 May 2026 the factor is applied in full to the first 14 kWh, at 60% from 14 to 28 kWh and at 15% from 28 to 50 kWh. The calculator uses the factor for installs completed by 31 December 2026 (6.8) and shows the January 2027 factor (5.7) alongside it so you can see the cost of waiting.

STC factors are the published schedule. Dollar values assume an indicative net STC value of about $37 after typical fees and will move with the certificate market; before 1 May 2026 the factor applied to every kWh up to 50 with no tiering. The factor that applies is the one in force on the day the battery is installed.

The SA REPS incentive is shown as a note rather than a figure because it is currently limited to priority households and the offer is set per provider. The ACT loan is finance rather than a rebate and is not added to the total.
Reading the result
The federal figure is the one to check against your quote: ask the installer to show the STC discount as a separate line and to confirm which factor they have assumed. If the install could slip past 1 January 2027, ask in writing what happens to the price. The state figure depends on a provider or vendor you have not chosen yet, so treat it as the size of the opportunity rather than a promise. The federal figure uses the published STC factor schedule and the tiering rules exactly, at an indicative net certificate value of about $37 per STC; your installer’s actual STC price may be a few dollars either side, which moves a 13.5 kWh result by a few hundred dollars. State figures use published rates but depend on the provider or vendor you choose. Treat the result as a range to check quotes against, not a quote.
Yes, where one exists. It adds the NSW VPP incentive, the WA Residential Battery Scheme (Synergy figure, with the Horizon Power figure shown alongside) and the City of Adelaide council rebate for postcodes 5000 and 5006. For SA’s REPS incentive and the ACT loan it explains the current status rather than adding a figure. Victoria, Queensland, Tasmania and the NT have no state battery rebate in 2026.
The federal STC factor steps down from 6.8 to 5.7 on that date and every six months after it, so the same battery installed in January 2027 earns about 16% less. The calculator shows both figures because the factor is set by the installation date, and install lead times of four to eight weeks mean a quote signed late in the year can land on the lower rate.
Usable capacity, not nominal. A Tesla Powerwall 3 is 13.5 kWh usable; many modular systems quote nominal capacity a little above usable. Your installer’s quote will state the usable figure the STCs are calculated on.
Since 1 May 2026 the federal discount is tiered: the first 14 kWh earns the full rate, 14 to 28 kWh earns 60% and 28 to 50 kWh earns 15%, with nothing above 50 kWh. The change was made to stop oversizing after average battery sizes doubled in the program’s first months. A 10 to 14 kWh battery captures the full rate on every kWh.
Yes. The battery must be paired with new or existing rooftop solar. If you select “no solar yet” the calculator still shows the figure but flags that panels would be needed to qualify.
Yes. The federal discount applies to small-business batteries up to 100 kWh nominal with STCs on the first 50 kWh usable, under the same tiers. State layers are mostly residential; the NSW VPP incentive is also open to small businesses.
